The union power ministry has invited fresh applications for selecting a chairman for Damodar Valley Corporation.
A central power utility with generating capacity of about 3000 MW, DVC has been without a head for nearly six months ever since its last chairman Mr Subrato Biswas was taken back to his parent Kerala cadre owing to objections from the Central Vigilance Commission.Subsequently, the power ministry initiated a process to appoint the chairman. In early December 2010, Mr Debasis Sen, a West Bengal cadre IAS officer, was selected as chairman.Currently the principal secretary of the State Urban Development Department, Mr Sen was previously chief election officer of the State and steered the state owned generation utility, West Bengal Power Development Corporation Ltd in the past. However, his appointment was faced with criticism from the several quarters on grounds of administrative error in the selection process as at least two members of Parliament Mr AH Khan Chowdhury and Mohammed Azharuddin of Congress in their communications to the union power minister, Mr Sushilkumar Shinde, expressed dissatisfaction over the selection and requested launch of a fresh selection campaign. In a communication on December 23, the Union Power Ministry invited fresh applications from the eligible candidates (IAS,engineers and before January 31st 2011. Those who had applied in the past were asked to refrain from applying again.
